9:50, IMO they should "plan" it for the 320kph, and when the bids fall short of what they want, then consider the 250kph option, but keep the land needed to do 320kph within the rail ROW. If they only reach the lowest branch first, then there will be no option to reach the higher one later, especially if they want to extend it it into areas that get into long winter periods.

The tracks between Union Station and Pico/Aliso should’ve been kept when the new section was built, thus transforming the section into a wye. Because now, passengers have to transfer to travel between Union Station and Pico/Aliso or any station east and it’s just one station. Union Station is expected to be busy so direct services should’ve been retained.

There is no clear standard for doors on buses here in Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro, most buses have two doors, but some have the second door in the middle and others at the back, depending on the company. It's also common to find buses with three doors, the third of which is exclusively for wheelchair users. We have articulated buses, but only on the BRT corridors. Other cities can use articulated buses outside the BRT as well. In the past, it was common for some buses to have only one door in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, but today this is restricted to "executive" standard intercity buses.

Alberta would be very smart to at least start this now. At the rate that it's developing, it'll be a lot harder to acquire the land 20 years from now. If they buy the land now then worst case scenario they have to wait an additional couple of years to get their ducks in a row before starting construction.

If not already the case, I think commercial vehicles should be completely exempt from the tax because they actually need to be there. Delivery drivers, emergency vehicles, electricians, plumbers, and all similar lines of work should not have to pay. Alan from New Jersey has no reason to drive into the heart of the city. XD

The is a culture of transit in Toronto that is not as common in US cities. twenty years ago, I was working in Rochester NY on a six-month contract doing IT work. When I went down there, I didn't have a car and took the bus to work. My boss told me to get off the bus in front of the office complex where the company was located. He called me into a meeting and informed me I would not be taking the bus anymore. The company rented a car for me for a month and informed me that I would have to get a car, or my contract would not be continued. I was informed that It looked bad on the company that I was taking the bus to work and it created an impression that the company was not paying me well enough. I was also expected to have a car to go to offsite meetings and sharing a ride with other employees could create issues. I did explain that In Toronto using public transit for commuting was considered a normal activity for most of the population in the downtown core of the city. But I ended up buying a car and getting my contract renewed for a second six-month term. But I was shocked at how concerned they were, and the impression given was that only the poorest people in Rochester used public transit. I am not sure if that perception has changed in the US present day.

You mentioned an ownership model where the province owns/maintains the infrastructure and companies compete for and run the operations. Personally I think that is the ideal model for most public infrastructure. I see it as a pity that our freight rail and most utilities devolve into private monopolies/oligopolies.

Achieving these things in Canada in general is very difficult because it is a dying and collapsing country on its last legs. Alberta specifically though, it still has some hope. As a car enjoyer and public transit hater, I actually liked your video and think it is a very good take on something that would likely be not only beneficial, but also achieve a reasonable degree of support from many people. I see a few issues though: 1. How finicky is high speed rail as you described? Alberta has very interesting weather and I am not fully convinced that trains would be unaffected by it. The example you gave is in a permanently warm area of the world. 2. How shall it be maintained as a clean alternative to planes? We know that an inconvenient truth about why public transit is so awful is diversity+hobos infesting and ruining it. Trains between airports won't have this problem, but routes with many stops might if someone doesn't use a but of force. Failing to address this inconvenient truth will (piss) stain the project. 3. Money. How much would it cost? Can an immense amount be saved by reducing the speed somewhat, therefore expanding the line to places like Lethbridge or Medicine Hat for the same price? How much would tickets cost in the end? As I mentioned also, Canada is collapsing as certain highly skilled demographics are evicted from the work force, such a train system should be as simple and long in the tooth as possible to withstand the coming years of total shite and incompetence. 4. Building a line to banff will ruin it even more. Banff has been doomed since it became well known, adding a train line there will be extremely profitable but totally desecrate the park.

When I saw a proposal for a hyperloop between Calagary and Edmonton, I did some back of the napkin calculations. Assuming a 300km straight line and no stops, the hyperloop would take 23minutes, the Siemans/Bombardier Intercity Express 3 (ICE-3) would take 52minutes, and the Yamanashi Maglev would take 36minutes. But if we compare the operating costs of these systems, the Maglev is currently 1.6 times the ICE-3 while the most optimistic estimates I could find for the hyperloop put it at 7.3times the cost of the ICE-3, and that's just the operating costs. Are you willing to spend 8 times the ticket price to save 29minutes? I mention this for any hyperloop fans out there. Hyperloop was never an economically viable business model.
